Alvaro and Sophie's visit to Ghana embodies what every lacrosse fan across the globe can do to support the growth of the game in Ghana and Africa. From the obstacle crossing at University of Ghana to the Mole National Park and back to Kuntu, the soul of Lacrosse in Ghana.
Spanish Lacrosse player and a member of European Lacrosse Federation, Alvaro Cassano was in Ghana from the 1st - 15th May 2022. The player from Madrid was accompanied by Sophie, who was on an educational trip, yet, her passion for lacrosse was noticeable during assessment programmes in Accra and Kuntu.
The Spaniards sync their culture with the Ghanaian traditions before landing at the at the Kotoka International Airport in the capital city of Ghana. The beginning of May 2022 set the tone of what became a rewarding lacrosse experience for the patrons from Madrid.
Before their adventurous trip to the Mole National Park, Alvaro and Sophie joined a training session of Legonknight Lacrosse Club (University of Ghana) in Accra on Saturday, May 7th 2022. The president of Ghana Lacrosse, Rufus Ntiamoah and the development team engaged Alvaro on how to churn quality players to represent Ghana at international tournaments.
At the time, athletes from Kuntu – the soul of lacrosse in Ghana – and Saltpond could not wait for their share of the Alvaro experience. The player from Madrid Lacrosse and his companion, Sophie were in-tune with the Ghanaian lifestyle by Day-7 of their trip and had maintained their generosity with lacrosse.
A rainy morning on Saturday, the 14th of May 2022 did very little to wipe the hopes of sixty-five (65) young athletes from Kuntu and Saltpond. After a safe cruise to the Cental Region, the traditional leaders welcomed the team and ushered them to the Kuntu sports field where the young athletes were waiting to practice lacrosse with Alvaro and Sophie. Alvaro demonstrated individual and team-focused drills like cutting, feeding, spacing, sliding and shooting.

A practice game between Dr G Spartans and Saltpond climaxed an epic day of lacrosse at Kuntu. The athletes from the coastal communities displayed an improved performance during the match to wrap up the day. The team visited Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School for a quick catch-up with the girls team before heading back to Accra. Alvaro and Sophie departed Ghana on 15th May 2022 to resume work at European Lacrosse Federation.
